Above As Below
Today I just jotted out a quick response to a picture prompt in one of my favorite Facebook groups, Writer’s Creative Circle.
This will be my final sunset.
As she sat alone, upon the stack of boulders the finality of her situation hit. In the morning, the ceremony would commence. Her coven’s bloodline would continue, protected.
Mother said she should feel pride. Her sacrifice would benefit so many. She only felt sadness. Despair for a life she would never get to know.
“I can help you.” The voice came from below her, the round face smile up from the water. “You could be my sister.” Her tail smacked the surface of the water and she giggled.
“What would I have to do?”
“Just jump,” the young mermaid beckoned her.
Without a second thought, she dove forward. The mermaid grabbed her firmly by the waist and pulled her lower and lower.
She couldn’t breathe. Further into the depths they sunk, her chest crushed and as her vision blacked out she realized Mother had outsmarted her.
“See, Julian. I knew she wouldn’t be dependable.”
“Yes, it is very well that you had a backup plan.”
